Seems to me that more companies than ever are slowly committing suicide—or at least self-mutilation—for the appearance of saving a few bucks. I choose to look at examples of intelligent or daring entrepreneurship as glimpses of the new economy. And when the economic outlook seems bleak, I tell myself that this is the disintegration that precedes rebirth. I prefer to believe that there’s a lot of opportunity for creative, brave, self-employed freelancers, consultants and entrepreneurs to emerge because there sure is a lot of stupidity out there now.

Confucius Lives Next Door by T.R. Reid is a fascinating look at the differences between American and Asian culture, with special attention to Japan. In particular, the Japanese demonstrate strong devotion to their employer, but in turn, the company returns the favor with intense loyalty towards workers.

I’m really distressed about this Mayan end-of-the-world scenario scheduled for December 21, 2012. No, I’m not distressed in the usual way: I am not fearful that we’ll all die in exactly three years and one month. Instead, I am distressed that so many people are so discouraged and fearful of the future that they anticipate the date with an emotion on the verge of relief.

We are well aware of the rapid pace of change in e-communications and marketing today. But a look back at the entertainment industry in the 20th century also reveals a period of constant change. Accusations that lower-quality but newer media are dumbing down the population continue.
Are you a member of Generation W?

We should rename the Baby Boomer as Generation W. The “W” stands for absolutely nothing; therefore, it is an effective label for a group that spans 18 birth years and has great variety in member lifestyles and attitudes.
